Luciano Pasquini was born in Florence, in 1943, but soon moved to his rural home in Mezzomonte, in the heart of Impruneta.
He attended the elementary school of San Gersolè under the guidance of his teacher, Maria Maltoni. This would provide the base for his future vocation- painting- and an operational promise of great operational importance, both in terms of his pictorial language as well as his thematic choices. His “Flowers”, his “Landscapes”, his “Glimpses of houses,”- always treated with grace and delicacy of colour- all derive from there: the quality of teaching, based on the maximum of freedom of expression, he received under the guidance of Maltoni.
As you can see by leafing through the booklet “The Primary School Teacher and Life – Maria Maltoni and Saint Gersolè’s school” (Noèdizioni, Impruneta 2006) his school had a positive influence on all those students who were fortunate enough to attend. Classes were held in a single room-laboratory in which all pupils from 1st to 5th year class and beyond were taught at the same time. Students were allowed to write and draw what they wanted, inspired by the rural environment in which they lived, in order not to instruct (ie to achieve a mere school acheivement) but to educate for life and bringing the child to be able to express himself freely and without fear of being judged intransigently and repressively by his teacher. Drawing from observation was the considered most important activity together with pupils’ writing of personal diaries which were then collected and published in volumes. The novelty of St. Gersolè’s proposed education and their educational performance earned it the honour of history and the attention of numerous personalities of culture, literature and art (from Peter Calandrei, Italo Calvino, Oriana Fallaci and Michelangelo Masciotta to Emilio Greek and Margaret Gardner and so on..) who explained the ways in leading newspapers and periodicals of the time.
In 1951, his family moved to an apartment block located still in the municipality of Impruneta, but on the outskirts of Mezzaponte. It was so, that Pasquini had to leave St.Gersolè, finishing their primary education under the guidance of another teacher. He didn’t, however, lose contact with the Tuscan landscape that would remain a constant theme in his painting, as he would never forget everything he experimented in St. Gersolè’s school- he continued drawing for some years afterwards with crayons (6 Giotto crayons and on the street, this time), but with the same enthusiasm St. Gersolè’s pupils.
In 1971, he picked-up his colours again, going directly to those in oil and rekindled the passion he had felt at school, yet that had remained dormant for many years. Indeed, when looking at his early work, similarities to his school drawings certainly may be seen. However, he would only realise this affinity in 2006 when visiting the exhibition of drawings entitled “Manner of St. Gersolè “, which was held at the Villa Corsini in Mezzamonte. In particular, he noticed the imposition of “still life ” and “flowers” which can be found right through his artistic career.
In 1972, he held his first solo exhibition with his brother Mauro, in Camonti, near Arezzo. It was curated by art critic Pietro Civitareale- with whom he is still friends and works with- who also the edited the first monograph on him (The colors of memory, Poesiarte, Florence 1988).
In 1974, he began his collaboration with Fratelli Alinari (nowadays, Ducci), where his paintings are still exhibited, and the Gallery of Ponte Vecchio in Florence, which he still maintains an active and ongoing collaboration with. In 1976, he presented his solo exhibitions in the Riviera del Conero, near Ancona, (exhibitions that have continued uninterruptedly right up to the present day) which were set up under the auspices of the City of Numana and the intervention of RAI-TV ( it also gave wide coverage to his paintings during regional news slots on TG3 Regione Marche). His
continuous visits to the area were reason for deepening his studies on seascapes. In 1985, he met the owners of the “Belvedere” Art Gallery which gave him the opportunity to set up exhibitions at the “BOLOGNA ART FAIR” between 1991 to 1999. These positive events marked his entire career as a painter.
In 1990, following a long period of cooperation with Koryo Co. Ltd. in Tokyo, he organised an exhibition in the Japanese capital, at the Modern Art Gallery Inc. In 1991, numerous Italian and foreign art galleries now began to open their doors to Pasquini’s work and thus, began an intense and fruitful collaboration with the world of painting, which would also be shown with numerous exhibitions in public places.
In 1995, the University of Camerino organized an exhibition at the Archbishop’s Palazzo, ensuring the preparation and printing of the book “Inside the landscape” which contained texts by Paul Levi and Mario Giannella, who was University Rector in those years. In 1998, he started a close and frequent collaboration with “SANGIORGIO INVESTMENTI D’ ARTE” in Bari- a company which has sales representatives operating throughout the country and that has promoted Luciano Pasquini’s work with remarkable results. In 1999, he met the art critic, Marcello Venturoli, who devoted his care of the book “Flowers and Country- mirror of the soul” and the accompanying catalogue to the
exhibition at Bologna’s 1999 ARTEFIERA.
In 2003, the “Lazarus by Corsi” Art Gallery in Milan together with “Sangiorgio Investmenti Arte”, organized the exhibition “Dreamt Beauty” with a catalogue of the collection entitled “Gallery Notebooks” which was written by Domenico Montalto.
In 2004, the region of Tuscany dedicated an exhibition- staged at the Regional Council headquarters – with the completion of a monograph entitled “Nature and some quiet bliss” which was curated by Giovanni Faccenda and text written by Riccardo Nencini, President of the Regional Council of Tuscany. In 2005, once again curated by Giovanni Faccenda, the monograph “Awakening of nature, awakening of painting” was published. It accompanied his exhibition- sponsored by the Region of Tuscany- at the Castle of Cafaggiolo in the town of Barberino del Mugello.
In 2007, he received the prestigious “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the City of Numana, near Ancona, during an important event which is held annually in Riviera del Conero. It was also in this year that the city of Perugia organised the exhibition “Nature as a source of poetry” in its Cannoniera hall in the monumental Rocca Paolina. Giovanni Faccenda and Fabio Migliorati took care of the monograph. At the end of the year, he presented a solo exhibition at the “Arfini” Art Centre in Alcamo, near Trapani. His association with this centre since 1992 continues until the present day.
In Italy, he participates annually in numerous exhibitions organized by Sangiorgio Investimenti d’Arte including: Expo Arte Bari, Arte Padova, Jesolo Fair, Parma Fair while his participation abroad include exhibitions organised by Art Fujita in Japan, Osaha and Yohohama, Reinermann & Co. in Germany and the Alexander of Florence Gallery in California, USA.
